A New Year, Wrapping up the Last Year, and the Incredible Tale of a Dog with Nine Lives

Like many fellow bloggers I have spent the past few days reminiscing over all the changes of the past year and thinking about what 2012 will have in store for us. 2011 brought us into our lovely home, gave us some great trips, and added one surprisingly cute puppy and six hens to our lives. With all the projects we had going we didn't get to spend as much time with friends and family as hoped but as we get our home in order we dream of the parties and visiting to come.

On the sadder side of things, Tim and I said a final goodbye my longtime companion and loyal dog Lady. I got her when I was twenty-one and she was one to two years old. She was my very first dog of my own and in many ways we grew up together. Lady was tossed off an overpass before she came into my life. She suffered two broken hips and a broken leg but had an amazing recovery and never looked back. Lady was with Becca when she met her husband Dave. My first date with Tim was hiking up Millcreek with Timber and Lady. Lady loved Tim right away. She taught me a lot of lessons about life and love before leaving us. She ate blankets, socks, rugs, curtains, 6 feet of Christmas ribbon, part of a robe, and many other things that amazingly never ended in surgery. Always up for a hike or adventure, the good times were plenty. Here are some of my favorite pictures of her over the years.

Lady the first night I brought her home. So spotted and too thin.

On her first dog bed. She came with the two blankets which I put on the bed and she LOVED blankets ever since. If you look closely you'll see her cast on her front leg.

Lady and Abbie at Bec and my old appartment. Abbie chewed off the side of the couch in her puppy phase, but Lady spent a lifetime of eating things. One of her nicknames was "The Goat."
Bec and Lady Just before getting Abbie.

 Ready for Christmas.

We caught them getting into the food on their own one day when we left the container out. They took off the lid.
Lady with a wrap on her neck after being attacked by another dog.
Several surgeries later, she almost didn't survive the infection. It was one of her nine + lives.

 Hiking up Red Butte.
Abbie, her first best friend and hiking buddy.

Always loved to lounge on a dog bed.
 Or stand in a stream.

Wearing my niece's hippo slippers *and maybe even liking them!

Always willing to tolerate a lot for a laugh.
Bec and Dave wearing the glasses, just to prove it wasn't only the animals we made wear them!
 Hiking buddies.
Another of her favorite places, the Uintas.
 All done parting.
     Turning grey.
The Uintas again, then up Millcreek.
Always excited when I made a new blanket, then jealous when I gave it away.

Willing to cuddle with just about anyone, including a cat or two.

She liked Charcoal right away. Maybe they bonded over their mishaps and broken limbs.

A little spoiled, as an old dog should be, while camping in the San Rafael Swell.

Her very favorite, water up to her belly but no deeper!

Loving life in the slot canyon with booties to protect her feet from the hot sand.

Curling up by the camp fire at Strawberry Reservoir.

Tim's birthday hike in the Uintas.

 Flaming Gorge.

 Sleeping in.

 Loving a sunny fall day.

 Still cuddle buddies.

Getting ready for bed while puppy-sitting Ping. She would try to get as close to him as she could.

 Getting ready to host bookclub.

Supervising yard work at the new house.

Loved to cuddle with her Timber dog and even little Gretchen.
